 The Interloper celebrates its first
birthday with twenty editions and 2000 hitsBRASILIA (DF) - On this day one year ago, the first edition of The Interloper was hesitatingly uploaded for limited public consumption. Audaciously claiming to be “Brazil’s first bilingual blog-paper”, The Interloper was, at its initial stages, an experiment in communication. Twenty articles later, it has successfully avoided the notorious label of “Brazil’s shortest-lived bilingual blog-paper”. “The response we received was immediate and very positive,” says Ron Halliday, creator and contributing editor. “Readers identified naturally with the ‘fish out of water’ situations presented in many of our articles. It has turned out to be an ideal way for me to share various unique and wonderful aspects of Brazilian culture, and much better than writing a hundred nearly identical e-mails.” “But I believe the staying power of The Interloper will be found in the effort that goes into each and every edition.” Ron continues. “Blogs are all well and good, but it is difficult to find interesting content between badly written poetry, song lyrics and famous quotations; tiring to read internet grammar with little or no punctuation. The only complaints people make are when we publish articles without photos!” So where will The Interloper go from here? “Wherever we go,” Ron replies assuredly. “Whether here in Brazil or on some foreign soil, there are always going to be fascinating things to write about. Even just yesterday I found out that it is common practice in Brazil for baby girls to get their ears pierced. In North America it’s usually a rite of passage reserved for teenagers! There will always be discoveries to be made and shared with my friends and family.” “There also may be opportunities for guest interlopers to submit their own pieces. Perhaps there are a few bloggers out there who would like to write full-length articles about the country they live in, or about their trips overseas. It would certainly be nice to get some other perspectives and be able to put out articles on a more consistent basis.” The Interloper would like to hear about your favourite articles and photos from our first year. edicões e 2.000 acessosBRASÍLIA (DF) - Neste dia há um ano atrás, a primeira edição do Interloper foi hesitantemente lançada para consumo público limitado. Afirmando audaciosamente ser “o primeiro jornal-blog bilíngüe no Brasil”, O Interloper foi, nos estágios iniciais, um experimento em comunicação. Vinte artigos depois, tem conseguido evitar o rótulo notório de “o jornal-blog bilíngüe de mais curta duração no Brasil”. “A resposta que nós recebemos foi imediata e bastante positiva,” diz Ronald Halliday, criador e editor contribuinte. “Leitores se identificaram naturalmente com as situações de ‘peixe fora d’água’ presentes em muitos dos artigos. Acabou sendo o jeito ideal de compartilhar vários aspectos únicos e maravilhosos da cultura brasileira, e bem melhor do que escrever cem e-mails quase idênticos.” “Mas eu acredito que o poder de permanência do Interloper será encontrado no esforço que é colocado em cada edição,” continua Ronald. “Blogs são até bacanas, mas é difícil achar conteúdo interessante entre poesia mal escrita, letras de música e citações famosas; é cansativo ler gramática de Internet com pouca ou sem pontuação. As únicas reclamações que as pessoas fazem é quando nós publicamos artigos sem fotos!” Então, para onde irá O Interloper agora? “A qualquer lugar para onde nós formos,” Ronald responde seguramente. “Seja aqui no Brasil ou em outro solo estrangeiro, sempre haverá coisas fascinantes para relatar. Ainda ontem eu aprendi que é prática comum no Brasil para recém-nascidas ter suas orelhas furadas. Na América do Norte é normalmente um ritual de passagem reservado para adolescentes! Sempre haverá descobertas a fazer e narrar a nossos amigos e famílias.” “Talvez haja oportunidades para convidados interlopers submeterem seus próprios escritos. Talvez haja alguns bloggers por aí que gostariam de escrever artigos completos sobre o país em que moram, ou sobre suas viagens além mar. Certamente seria legal colher outras perspectivas e ser capaz de publicar edições de forma consistente.” O Interloper gostaria de ouvir quais são seus artigos e fotos prediletos de nosso primeiro ano.
