BRASILIA,
DF – When I first moved to Brazil in September of 2004, I remarked at
the number of movies on public television. On any given day, between
four and eight films will play on the five national networks. And not
only is the quantity impressive, but the variety as well – I have
probably spied more Canadian flicks here in a year and a half than
appear on CTV in a decade.
Following are some of the best and worst movies that I have seen pass
on
peasant vision. Details and ratings for each film were taken from the
IMDB website.

BRASÍLIA
(DF) – Quando eu me mudei para Brasil em setembro de 2004, eu reparei
no
número de filmes na televisão aberta. Todos os dias,
entre
quatro e oito filmes passarão nos cinco canais nacionais. E
é
impressionante tanto a quantidade quanto a variedade – eu notei
provavelmente mais películas canadenses aqui dentro de um ano e
meio do que no canal CTV
(Canadian Television Network) em uma década.
A seguir estão alguns dos melhores e dos piores filmes que eu
vi anunciados na TV aberta. Detalhes e rankings para cada filme foram
tirados do site IMDB.

Another dozen of IMDB’s top 250 movies have also aired, including The
Princess Bride (120), Groundhog Day (179), Central do Brasil (237),
Harold and Maude (246) and The Man Who Would Be King (247).
Many foreign language films (i.e. English) are shown with Portuguese
subtitles, since Brazilians are accustomed to watching television
programs from other places. Sometimes there are two audio channels
available, one in Portuguese and the other in the original language.
Just as much Chinese can be heard on Brazilian TV as French on English
TV in Canada!
Unlike the Canadian national networks, films are shown in their
entirety, and visually
uncensored. The Portuguese dubbing is usually watered down somewhat,
but the dirty English jokes and curse words remain intact in the
captioning or on the secondary audio channel. It's actually an
important aid when trying to figure out the inevitably garbled
translations of North American cultural references.

no ar, incluindo A Princesa Prometida (120), Feitiço do Tempo
(179), Central do Brasil (237), Ensina-me a Viver (246) e O Homem Que
Queria Ser Rei (247).
Muitos filmes estrangeiros são mostrados com legendas em
português, porque brasileiros estão acustumados a assistir
programas de televisão que vêm de fora do país. As
vezes há dois canais de áudio, um em português e o
outro na
idioma original. Tanto chinês pode ser ouvido na TV brasileira
como francês na TV inglesa do Canadá!
Diferentemente das redes nacionais canadenses, filmes são
mostrados
integralmente, e sem censura visual.
O português dublado é tipicamente suavizado, mas as
piadas sujas e palavrões ficam intactos nas legendas ou no canal
de áudio secundário. É realmente uma dica
importante na hora de tentar entender as trapalhadas inevitáveis
nas
traduções das referências culturais
norte-americanas.

With the good comes the bad, unfortunately – at least five of IMDB’s
worst 100 have been on TV too, as evidenced by the previous list. In
Brazil bad movies are universally known as being of sessão de tarde quality.
These ‘matinee session’ films are dubious at best and can usually be
spotted by their ‘stars’: Dolph Lundgren, Christopher Lambert, Ed
Begley Jr., Martin Mull or Chevy Chase.
Well, I forgive Chevy Chase. He’s in Snow Day (2000, 44%) so I get to
see Calgary a couple of times a year.

indicado na lista prévia. Filmes péssimos são
conhecidos como sendo da ‘sessão da tarde’. Esses
são suspeitos na melhor das hipóteses e podem ser
identificados por suas ‘estrelas’:

Bem, eu vou perdoar Chevy Chase. Ele está em Quebrando o Gelo
(2000, 44%), então posso ver a cidade de Calgary algumas vezes
