CURITIBA, PA – Curitiba (pop. 1,750,000) is
the capital of the state of Parana and is considered to be one of the
greenest cities in Brazil. Many eastern Europeans settled here in the
second half of the 19th century, which can be evidenced by the
lifestyle, food, architecture and appearance of today’s residents.

é considerada com uma das
cidades mais verdes do Brasil. Vários europeus orientais
imigraram para lá na segunda metade do século XIX, o que
pode ser
evidenciado pelo estilo de vida, pela comida, pela arquitetura e pela
aparência dos atuais habitantes. Acima, a vista da Torre
Panorâmica Mercês, o ponto mais alto da cidade.

Left, the Oscar Neimeyer Art Museum was most
certainly designed with The Lord of The Rings in mind, as it would
likely make a nice summer home for the Eye of Sauron. Right, the
exquisite greenhouse at the French-inspired Botanical Gardens.

of Our Lady of Light, dating back to 1893. Curitiba was founded on this
exact spot exactly two hundred years earlier, in 1693. Right, the
Ukrainian Memorial, complete with a painted metallic egg.

| Left, the Polish Memorial and The Pope’s Park,
dedicated to Pope John Paul II during his visit to Brazil in 1980. A
museum of sorts, visitors can walk into the various buildings to see
how life was like for Polish settlers at the end of the 19th century.
Middle, the waterfall and public square at Tangua Park, site of two
quarries no longer in use. Visitors can pass through the rock face via
a 50 metre tunnel. Right, Tingui Park, a popular refuge for city
dwellers looking to go for a jog or get some fresh air in a lush and
relaxing atmosphere. • À

dedicado ao Papa João Paulo II durante sua visita ao Brasil em
1980. No meio, a cachoeira e a praça pública no Parque
Tanguá, local de duas pedreiras que já não
funcionam hoje em
dia. Visitantes podem passar através da rocha por um
túnel de 50 metros. À direita, o Parque Tingüi,
refúgio predileto dos habitantes da cidade carentes de fazer
cooper ou de conseguir ar fresco em uma atmosfera verde e relaxante.
