- Before Nickelodeon, before The Cartoon Network, before Disney Channel
and digital cable, there were Saturday morning cartoons. Once a week,
while their parents were asleep in bed, North American children turned
the television set on to watch (and re-watch) their favourite animated
programs.With the advent of specialty channels, the phrase “Saturday morning cartoons” has nearly disappeared from the television landscape. The same stations that used to show six uninterrupted hours of children’s entertainment now have morning news programs and political discussion groups traditionally reserved for Sunday (as part of their marketing ploy to force subscribers to buy family-oriented cable channels). In Brazil however, every morning is Saturday morning! Most stations purchase popular modern successes (The Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob Squarepants), classic shorts (Merry Melodies, Looney Tunes) and obscure Hanna-Barbara failures (Jabberjaw). They even go so far as to repackage animated specials into short-lived series’, like the suffocatingly cute Strawberry Shortcake meets The Berrykins and the entirely forgettable The Flintstones meet Rockula and Frankenstone. And Brazil’s love affair with morning cartoons is destined to continue. As reported by VEJA, broadcasters have learned that it is much cheaper to hire a couple of teenagers to introduce programs rather than pay a talk show host – and they'll earn higher ratings by doing so. All the better for us who would like to see Thundercats one more time. Antes de Nickelodeon, antes da Cartoon Network, antes do Disney Channel
e da tv a cabo, eram desenhos animados de sábado de
manhã. Uma vez por semana, enquanto seus pais ainda estavam
dormindo, crianças norte-americanas ligavam a televisão
para assistir (e assistir de novo) episódios de seus programas
animados prediletos.Com o advento de canais especializados, a expressão “desenhos animados de sábado de manhã” tem quase desaparecido do mundo da televisão. As mesmas estações que costumavam mostrar seis horas ininterruptas de entretenimento infantil agora têm programas de notícias matinais e grupos de discussões políticas tradicionalmente reservados para o domingo (como parte de seu plano de marketing para forçar assinantes a comprar canais orientados à família). No Brasil, porém, toda a manha é manha de sábado! A maioria das estações compram sucessos populares modernos (As Meninas Superpoderosas, Bobsponja Calcas-quadradas), curtas clássicos (Merry Melodies, Looney Tunes) e obscuros fracassos de Hanna-Barbara (Tu-tubarão). Elas vão até o ponto de recortar longos especiais animados em séries de curta duração, como o sufocantemente doce Moranguinho Encontra Os Berrykins e o completamente esquecível Os Flintstones Encontram Rockula e Frankenstone. E o caso de amor brasileiro com desenhos animados é fadado a continuar. Como exposto em VEJA, redes de televisão aprenderam que é muito mais barato empregar alguns adolescentes para apresentar programas ao invés de pagar um host de talk show – e vão conseguir mais pontos de audiência fazendo isso. Melhor para nós que queremos ver Os Thundercats mais uma vez.
